Comedy is not a science, it's art. Therefore there are no rules and it can be
very subjective. What one person finds funny another might cringe at.
One thing worth noting is that when
analysing comedy and what is funny, it is almost like it is only visible out of
the corner of your eye. As soon as you try and look directly at it and analyse
it too much... all of the funniness disappears...
Why do we find things funny? Why
does this reaction force us to convulse and make that noise?
I have no idea.
There is no simple answer to why
something is funny... Something is funny because it captures a moment, it
contains an element of simple truth, it is something that we have always known
for eternity and yet are hearing it now out loud for the first time.
I think that our need to feel
intelligent comes into play a lot in finding things funny... maybe humour is
actually the overwhelming joy at feeling intelligent. Somebody tries to put on
their shoes standing up and falls over in the process. They look foolish, we
therefore feel intelligent as we are not the one falling over trying to put on
shoes.
We laugh.
Someone makes a clever joke and
only a few people get it. If we get the joke we recognise the person as being
clever and feel clever ourselves as we understood the concept.
We laugh.
So is humour partly to do with self
congratualtion at being intelligent?
Comedy is full of opposites and
contradictions.
His story is one of grass to grace. From humble
beginnings in Benin, the comedian known as MC Baba Nass AKA IRON CONDOM has
risen to be one of Nigeria’s most prominent comedians. In fact, everything
about him is comic. As I regarded him, I couldn’t help but crack up once again
as I recollected his jokes for the evening.
MC Baba Nass has come a long way FROM BENIN TO KANO
AND ABUJA to the UK and the US in view including most European capitals, the UN
Peace Ambassador has plied his trade winning fans across the globe and
thrilling audiences.
MC Baba Nass been actively involved in the business
of making people crack up with laughter. Over the years his style has evolved.
From dwelling on mundane issues, MC Baba Nass has since gone political
displaying rare courage as he picks on current and sensitive political issues
affecting Nigerians globally. Where does he find the courage to carry on
considering the tense political situation in the country? Baba nasss i salute u
“First of all we need to understand the society in
which we live. You and I have the responsibility of using our talents to
promote peace among our people because when there is conflict, no matter how
successful you’re, you’re going to be affected.
“I believe that it’s my civic responsibility as a
human being to use my talent to impact people and discuss serious issues going
on in our society in a comical way; I mean issues affecting you and I in our
society. Even if I’m joking with unimaginable truth, I try as much as
possible not to create wrong notions.
“The truth is that musicians like Fela Anikulapo
Kuti used their music to correct society and pass a message. For me, since I’m
in control of the micro phone and people listen to me, the best I can do is
tell people that we can actually solve our problems not by believing in government
but by looking inwards.”
